In the 1980’s, Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, took a 1960’s invention (the computer mouse) and revolutionized the computer industry. In the summer of 2000, BT discovered that it had patented hypertext linking (the way we navigate the Internet) in 1980 – a full 9 years before Tim Berners-Lee and CERN began to develop the World Wide Web. BT weren’t alone – Douglas Engelbart had also discussed the concept in 1968. In 1802, Sir Humphry Davy demonstrated a prototype incandescent lamp, but it was Thomas Edison who developed the light bulb – a full 77 years later. That gap between the market and technology is sometimes called the innovation gap, and that is the gap that the graduates of our Masters in Marketing of innovations under current technological trends.

Environmental biotechnology

Degree: Master in Ecological Biotechnology (in English) in Russia

Study Ecological Biotechnology in Russia under the Learning in Russia™ program for international students! We welcome you to study in Russia. study Ecological Biotechnology in Russia and get going in the fastest growing and highest paid modern industries!

Duration: 2 years
Language: English
Requirements: at least IELTS – 6, 0 TOEFL iBT – 79

The field of biotechnology has matured during the past decade encompassing the application of modern microbiological concepts to the new and rapidly developing field of environmental protection. The synthesis between microbiology and environmental engineering provides a means of understanding processes leading to pollution occurrence, detection, monitoring, prevention and control. Biotechnology offers both conventional and innovative solutions to problems associated with water pollution, contamination of the soil, the atmosphere, and the stratosphere.  Molecular genetics provides new techniques for the detection and modification of micro-organisms, for the degradation of hazardous chemicals, and as a means of safely controlling agricultural pests. Environmental biotechnology techniques, or bioprocesses, are now increasingly popular in the detection and treatment of wastes, wastewaters and other environmental contaminants.

Environmental biotechnology is the application of biotechnology for solving environmental problems, both in the environment per se (e.g. bioremediation) or in manmade ecosystems (e.g. sewage treatment plants). In open systems, this can only be achieved by applying ecological principles and cooperating with the local microbiota based on a “join them” instead of a “beat them” strategy.

In principle, Environmental biotechnology may include:

  • Cleaning of effluents and treatment of waste
  • Alternative and more environmental friendly processes
  • Alternative and more environmental friendly products

Environmental biotechnology can simply be described as “the optimal use of nature, in the form of plants, animals, bacteria, fungi and algae, to produce renewable energy, food and nutrients in a synergistic integrated cycle of profit making processes where the waste of each process becomes the feedstock for another process”.
Significance towards agriculture, food security, climate change mitigation and adaptation and the MDGs== Science through the IAASTD has called for the advancement of small-scale agro-ecological farming systems and technology in order to achieve food security, climate change mitigation, climate change adaptation and the realisation of the Millennium Development Goals. Environmental biotechnology has been shown to play a significant roll in agroecology in the form of zero waste agriculture and most significantly through the operation of over 15 million biogas digesters worldwide.

Environmental biotechnology 3

Description

The program’s aim is to prepare the modern highly skilled experts, using practical skills and theoretical knowledge of biotechnology and ecobiotechnology in their professional activity.
The program provides profound knowledge of foreign languages and pays great attention to development of students’ communication skills. The program curriculum includes courses that improve skills of understanding, communication, writing and reading scientific literature in a foreign language.

Aims

Students will acquire knowledge of the main biotechnological methods, modern technologies for nature protection; will be able to evaluate biological and industrial safety, to do research work, to evaluate the results and to write scientific articles; to teach students (courses: Nature protection, Fundamentals of ecological biotechnology, Modern problems of Ecology and etc.

Career opportunities

Graduates are expected to possess the skills necessary for any future professional career in the biotechnology field (or related) as well as for further academic studies.

Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology involves the use of enzymes and microorganisms to make products specifically or provide services such as wastewater treatment. It is of great importance to sectors such as fine and bulk chemicals, pharmaceuticals or building blocks for these, food & feed, paper & pulp, energy, textiles and other polymeric materials. Thus, it is in this extensive industrial community where we primarily find future career possibilities. Other career opportunities can be found in academic research, patent and consultant agencies, finance, and research politics or in journalism.

The general vision is that Europe will have made substantial progress towards a bio-based society by 2025, and in particular that the European chemical industry will regard biotechnology as an essential part of the process and product development tool kit. This means that the market for bioengineers likely will continue to grow in the future, and that industrial/environmental bioengineers will be one of the cornerstones in forming a sustainable society.

study Economics of Natural Resource Management (Master in Ecology & Environmental Management) in English language in Russia

Study Ecology & Environmental Management in Russia under the Learning in Russia™ program for international students! We welcome you to study in Russia. Studying in English language will help you think, analyze, ascertain and reach at a conclusion the topics and issues that interest you in a language comfortable to you and native to many of our international students. It will also give you the added benefit of understanding the Russia perspective, “Russian way of doing things”, without learning the Russian language.

Degree: Master in Ecology & Environmental Management

Duration: 2 years
Language: English
Requirements: at least IELTS – 6, 0 TOEFL iBT – 79

Description

Ecology explores the interactions between plants, animals with their habitats. This Master program has a particular focus on understanding ecosystems and ecological processes. Students learn how to apply scientific principles to understand natural systems. This understanding is applied to current questions regarding the past, current and future impacts of human activities on organisms, ecosystems and the environment. Graduates will be well prepared to make appropriate and informed decisions about the management and/or conservation of our environment, its ecosystems and the plants and animals that they support.

Learning to Think Like a Mountain

In his famous collection of essays, The Sand County Almanac, Aldo Leopold, the father of modern American conservation and a member of the class of 1909, recounts the story of the extermination of New Mexico’s wolves – which in his younger years, he had himself participated in. In the decades that followed the slaughter, deer populations burgeoned without natural predators and devastated the vegetation of the mountain slopes.

Human managers had failed to consider the inter-dependencies of a complete ecological system in pursuit of control, profit, and safety. Time and time again, humans and natural systems have suffered from the unintended consequences of short-sighted actions. Leopold proposed that we instead “learn to think like a mountain.” The mountain, he notes, lives in fear of its deer as much as the deer live in fear of the wolves. The mountain appreciates the interconnections of the environment and knows that bounty requires limits.

Aims

The course aims to generate:

  • Graduates with a thorough grounding in analytical & practical research methods in the context of advanced training in the area of ecology and environmental management
  • Graduates that can embark on careers in research, or alternatively to move into careers that require assessment of the research of others, or agencies that commission new research
  • Ecologists with a proper regard for the socio-economic context of their work
  • Environmental managers with a full understanding of the natural processes operating within the area they manage

Program Structure

The master’s program consists of a two-year study (4 semesters) of which the last semester is dedicated to the master’s thesis.

  • The first semester focuses on basic knowledge of natural sciences (e.g.: biotic and abiotic structures and dynamics of ecosystems, including anthropogenic modifications and disturbances) and modelling methods.
  • The second semester is dedicated to practical fieldwork carried out during excursions, as well as further interactive cooperation activities with professionals in the field. The main focus is on the development of integrative, regional management concepts and on the building of knowledge regarding system analysis, including socio-eocnomic components.
  • The third semester combines basic knowledge and method knowledge to develop sustainable management concepts.
  • The fourth semester consists of the individual work on the master’s thesis.
