The field of biotechnology has matured during the past decade encompassing the application of modern microbiological concepts to the new and rapidly developing field of environmental protection. The synthesis between microbiology and environmental engineering provides a means of understanding processes leading to pollution occurrence, detection, monitoring, prevention and control. Biotechnology offers both conventional and innovative solutions to problems associated with water pollution, contamination of the soil, the atmosphere, and the stratosphere. Molecular genetics provides new techniques for the detection and modification of micro-organisms, for the degradation of hazardous chemicals, and as a means of safely controlling agricultural pests. Environmental biotechnology techniques, or bioprocesses, are now increasingly popular in the detection and treatment of wastes, wastewaters and other environmental contaminants.
Environmental biotechnology is the application of biotechnology for solving environmental problems, both in the environment per se (e.g. bioremediation) or in manmade ecosystems (e.g. sewage treatment plants). In open systems, this can only be achieved by applying ecological principles and cooperating with the local microbiota based on a “join them” instead of a “beat them” strategy.
In principle, Environmental biotechnology may include:
- Cleaning of effluents and treatment of waste
- Alternative and more environmental friendly processes
- Alternative and more environmental friendly products
Environmental biotechnology can simply be described as “the optimal use of nature, in the form of plants, animals, bacteria, fungi and algae, to produce renewable energy, food and nutrients in a synergistic integrated cycle of profit making processes where the waste of each process becomes the feedstock for another process”.
Significance towards agriculture, food security, climate change mitigation and adaptation and the MDGs== Science through the IAASTD has called for the advancement of small-scale agro-ecological farming systems and technology in order to achieve food security, climate change mitigation, climate change adaptation and the realisation of the Millennium Development Goals. Environmental biotechnology has been shown to play a significant roll in agroecology in the form of zero waste agriculture and most significantly through the operation of over 15 million biogas digesters worldwide.

Description
The program’s aim is to prepare the modern highly skilled experts, using practical skills and theoretical knowledge of biotechnology and ecobiotechnology in their professional activity.
The program provides profound knowledge of foreign languages and pays great attention to development of students’ communication skills. The program curriculum includes courses that improve skills of understanding, communication, writing and reading scientific literature in a foreign language.
Aims
Students will acquire knowledge of the main biotechnological methods, modern technologies for nature protection; will be able to evaluate biological and industrial safety, to do research work, to evaluate the results and to write scientific articles; to teach students (courses: Nature protection, Fundamentals of ecological biotechnology, Modern problems of Ecology and etc.
Career opportunities
Graduates are expected to possess the skills necessary for any future professional career in the biotechnology field (or related) as well as for further academic studies.
Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology involves the use of enzymes and microorganisms to make products specifically or provide services such as wastewater treatment. It is of great importance to sectors such as fine and bulk chemicals, pharmaceuticals or building blocks for these, food & feed, paper & pulp, energy, textiles and other polymeric materials. Thus, it is in this extensive industrial community where we primarily find future career possibilities. Other career opportunities can be found in academic research, patent and consultant agencies, finance, and research politics or in journalism.
The general vision is that Europe will have made substantial progress towards a bio-based society by 2025, and in particular that the European chemical industry will regard biotechnology as an essential part of the process and product development tool kit. This means that the market for bioengineers likely will continue to grow in the future, and that industrial/environmental bioengineers will be one of the cornerstones in forming a sustainable society.
