The treaty signed this last Wednesday at the Venetian Palazzo Ca’ Farsetti is set to put cultural co-operation between Venice and St. Petersburg on a new level.

Its program will include exchanging top professionals in art history, museum craft, the restoration of historical monuments and preservation of cultural heritage. Projects dedicated to collecting, theater art and architecture have also been included on the extensive program of strengthening cultural ties between Russia and Italy.

The treaty was signed by the head of St. Petersburg’s main fine arts museum, the State Hermitage, Mikhail Piotrovsky, the head of the Italian city of Venice, Giorgio Orsoni, and the heads of several influential cultural institutions.

The mayor of Venice underlined that the history of intense cultural co-operation between Venice and St. Petersburg goes back several centuries. “Opening today the ‘big season’ of renewed relations i the field of culture, we hope that in the future these relations will contribute to the creation of an extensive inter-European cultural co-operation system, with [Venice] becoming its important center,” Giorgio Orsoni said.

The treaty was signed within Russia-Italy cross-cultural year. Hundreds of events aimed at spreading Italian culture to Russia and vice versa are being held in Russian and Italian cities.
